Corporate Social Responsibility
Success, But Not at Any Price
At P/Kaufmann Contract we believe that corporate and environmental responsibility are inextricably linked. Over the past three decades we have worked to develop culture and initiatives that protect the environment and enhance our community.
Fostering Sustainability within the Hospitality Community
From our own operation to our innovative manufacturing partners and forward-thinking customers, we are able to reduce the impact of our products on the ecosystem at each stage of the life cycle. Our mission is to positively influence the environmental practices of the hospitality furnishings industry as a whole. We are proud to be a Founding Member of the Hospitality Sustainable Purchasing Consortium (HSPC), through which we engage with our clients and peers in a broad but focused dialogue to establish a sustainability measurement for hospitality industry suppliers.
Mindful Material Sourcing
When sourcing dyes for our printed and woven fabrics, we seek out suppliers with robust environmental strategies. Our major domestic print source utilizes water-based rather than chemical-based inks, and recently installed an in-house water filtration system to ensure that clean, filtered water is returned to the community. They also use recycled water throughout the manufacturing process and use heat transfer printing paper that is Forest Stewardship Council certified. After it has been used for printing our fabrics, the paper is recycled to eliminate waste.
We look carefully at the manufacturing practices and the material composition of the products we bring to our clients. Many products have earned certification from third party organizations that monitor environmental and health concerns. For example, our new High Plains Collection is certified with the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, an independent textile assessment that ensures that products are free of harmful substances.
Utilizing Recycled Materials
In 2005 P/Kaufmann Contract became the first fabric converter to introduce 100% recycled polyester basecloths. We expanded this offering in 2008 with P/K Conserves, a partnership with the Nature Conservancy in support of their global conservation efforts. The collection included post-consumer and post-industrial recycled polyester and post-industrial recycled olefin constructions. These unique designs earned Cradle-to-Cradle sustainability certification from MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry LLC). Several of P/Kaufmann's products are made of recycled content, including items in our latest Material Geometry Collection in addition to our basecloth Lustrous made from repreve yarn.
We strive to reduce waste in all areas of operations from manufacturing to end of life. Our warehouse team has undertaken an initiative to reduce waste by using the minimal amount of packing materials when shipping products to our customers and the material that we do use is sourced from recycled content. Many of our products find new life in partnerships with non-profits. Since 2004, we have supported Good360 with fabric donations.
Work with Non-Profits
For years, P/Kaufmann employees have gathered to participate in events benefiting the American Cancer Society, including Making Strides of Central Park, Lee National Denim Days and Daffodil Days.
In 1990, we formed the Kaufmann Foundation to support charitable and educational organizations. Over the years, we have continually donated to New York City organizations like Children’s Aid Society and City Harvest.
